How to Create a Luxury Bathroom When Working With a Small Budget

Luxury remodeling doesn’t always require a luxury budget. That spa retreat style you always wanted for your bathroom can actually be pretty feasible if you do it right. There are a couple things you can do to get that luxury feel out of your bathroom renovation on a small budget.

Redo & Reuse

Reusing existing aspects of your bathroom will really cut back on costs. If they still work well enough to meet your standards, you don’t necessarily need to get rid of them. Some items could be upgraded with a deep cleaning, getting down into all the cracks and crevices where dirt and grime can hide. Sand down wooden surfaces and repaint or stain them instead of completely replacing them. Repair what needs to be repaired, if you can. Instead of replacing your tub, have it relined by a professional, which can be surprisingly cheaper than buying and installing a new one.

Conserve Your Tile

The style and amount of tile that you chose for your bathroom renovation can get expensive. Focus on areas in the bathroom that have a high-impact, such as the floor. If you want tile for the walls, consider doing part of the wall in tile and paint the rest in a complementary color. An additional option would be having tile on one wall for accent and the rest be painted, if you want to go for chic aesthetics. The same can be done with a combination of artistic tiles and plainer tiles; limiting the amount of expensive tiles will save money and they will be more noticeable when framed with the cheaper ones.

Update Fixtures

It’s the little things that often have the greatest impact. The fixtures in your bathroom can be easily updated without spending a lot. Details like faucets, towel racks, lights, or drawer pulls can make a big difference in the look of your bathroom. Depending on your stylistic goals, you don’t have to buy fixtures from your local home improvement store. Modifying an old pipe into a towel rack or building a simple shelf can be a unique way to save money and add your own personal touch to the design.

Upgrade the Exhaust Fan

The exhaust fan helps keep mildew and mold from growing in your bathroom, which can damage surfaces in addition to being dangerous to your health. You shouldn’t be able to hear the fan when it’s running. If you’re not sure if your fan is getting the job done, look at its cubic feet per minute, or CFM, rating listed inside the fan’s cover. Calculate the volume of your bathroom, in feet—width times length times ceiling height—and compare it to the fan’s CFM. If you need a new fan for your bathroom, consider one that has a combined light fixture with it.

Buy Used or Recycle

Going with a used fixture, toilet or shower can save you a ton of money. Upcycled bathroom accessories are common on websites like Etsy and eBay and some sellers will do custom work. If you’re going for a classic or vintage look, buying from auctions, antique centers, or even the occasional rummage sale could turn up bathroom accessories that are in good working condition.
